Planning for Windows Server 2003/R2 End of Support
used with permission from Microsoft
On July 14, 2015, Microsoft will end support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2. Organizations that fail to migrate from Windows Server 2003/R2 before this date will be out of compliance with certain existing business standards and possibly expose themselves to vulnerabilities.
Fortunately, migrating to a supported server operating system can help you mitigate these risks and deliver valuable benefits and efficiencies that are not available in Windows Server 2003/R2. To take advantage of this opportunity, your organization will need a clear understanding of the different on-premises and cloud migration options available.
Don’t forget that Microsoft dropped support for Windows XP in April of 2014. Outsource IT Solutions Group is a certified Microsoft Gold Solution Provider and a Microsoft Small Business Specialist. The security and privacy implications of end of support could have significant impacts on your business. A change of this magnitude is a time-consuming activity requiring extensive planning and preparation; so if you’re running either Windows XP or Office 2003 you should take action soon. Even though Microsoft recently released its new operating system Windows 8, its predecessor will be around for a long time. Windows 7 was released in October of 2009, it was intended to be a focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line, with the goal of being compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista and earlier operating systems were already compatible.
Windows 8 is a completely redesigned operating system that’s been developed from the ground up with touch screen use in mind as well as near-instant-on capabilities that enable a Windows 8 PC to load and start up in a matter of seconds rather than in minutes. Windows 8 will replace the more traditional Microsoft Windows OS look and feel with a new “Metro” design system interface that first debuted in the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system. The Metro user interface primarily consists of a “Start screen” made up of “Live Tiles,” which are links to applications and features that are dynamic and update in real time. Windows 8 supports both x86 PCs and ARM processors.
Windows 8.1 provides the best user experience on all types of devices:
Personalize your Start screen with the people, apps, and information that matter most to you and with unique designs, colors, photos, and live tiles that give you instant information.
Windows 8.1 has the new Start screen, but also still has the familiar desktop where you can do everything that you are used to doing with Windows.
Great apps are built in, and there are many more (number may vary by region) additional apps in the Windows Store to suit everyone’s interests and needs.
File copying has been improved so you can pause large jobs, view the progress of multiple copy jobs at the same time, and more easily manage conflicts.
Faster boot times, longer battery life, and better security. New security features include built-in, anti-virus software (Windows Defender) and an improved Smart Screen Filter for preventing malware infections.
Windows 10 is the productivity software that individuals and corporations have been asking for. It has been built collaboratively with customers, and embraces its history while learning from the past to create something that’s both functional and familiar. With this combination, Windows 10 is the operating system that takes us from the modern day into the future.
